IndiGo Cuts Ties with Turkish Airlines Amid Ankara's Support to Pakistan
IndiGo was under intense pressure to reexamine its strategy after Turkey supported Pakistan in the conflict between the two countries.
A political conflict between two countries has far-reaching impact on people, economies, and cultural ties. Indigo came under a staunch attack for its agreement with Turkish Airlines. The recent political tensions between the two South Asian countries have begun to show the strategic fallouts.
IndiGo will terminate the existing lease with Turkish Airlines by August 31 this year. India's Aviation Regulator mentioned it on Friday: The move will push the carrier to seek alternatives.
Air India, IndiGo's rival, cited security reasons to cancel the deal with the Indian government.
The Directorate General of Civil Aviation highlighted the concerns: We have agreed to a three-month extension instead of six months as requested by IndiGo. The passenger convenience was a deciding factor behind the decision.
The regulator stated that Indigo gave an undertaking that it would finish the agreement with Turkish Airlines. Earlier, the airline defended its alliance by highlighting the benefits to domestic travelers, aviation boost, and growth opportunities.
Since 2018, IndiGo has been in partnership with Turkish Airlines. IndiGo's termination of the agreement comes after the public boycott of Turkish products like coffee and chocolate in the country.
